Seton Hall Student Alumni Association to Begin Recruitment Process

SAA Seeks Eight New Members

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.—The Student Alumni Association is looking for eight school spirited new members to join the organization. Each spring, SAA looks for members to replace its graduating seniors and enhance its presence on campus through event planning, networking, and educating the student body about the Pirate community. In time time leading up to recruitment, members will be highlighting their experiences in SAA on social media using the hashtag “#TheSAAWay.”

Core Facts

  • The application process is multistep. Applicants must attend an interest session, complete an application, interview, and go through a group process. Each of these steps is to assess how each member would fit into SAA’s team.
  • In previous years, there have been as many as 60 applicants.
  • SAA is a well-regarded group in the student advancement community. The Council for Advancement and Support of Education and Affiliated Student Advancement Programs (CASE ASAP) awarded SAA with Outstanding Organization in its district and Laura Tecza, President of SAA, with Outstanding Student Leader. CASE ASAP also recognized SAA’s hard work by choosing it to cohost this year’s annual conference in Columbus, OH.
  • SAA plans events on campus such as Bounce N Trounce, True Blue Month, Pirate’s Birthday, and Talk like a Pirate Day. In the previous year, it has beaten its records in these events with over 200,000 bounces at Bounce N Trounce, 800 thank you cards signed during True Blue Month, and over 1,500 students engaged throughout the year.
  • SAA is the keeper of Seton Hall’s favorite traditions like visiting Ms. Virginia, never stepping on the seal, and rubbing the Pirate’s foot for luck. It aims to preserve these traditions to connect students and alumni in a more personal way.

Founded in 2005, the Student Alumni Association (SAA) is an undergraduate organization that works in partnership with Seton Hall’s Alumni Relations office. The group seeks to better the University community by fostering relationships between current students and graduates, fostering school spirit and educating undergraduate students about the benefits of a life-long relationship with Seton Hall University.

The Student Alumni Association creates dynamic campus programming to engage students, faculty, staff and alumni in its mission. SAA founded Spirit Week at Seton Hall, created Pirate Pandemonium, and works with the office of Alumni Relations on exclusive networking events for its members.

The End of an Era: Announcing Dr. Esteban’s Departure from Seton Hall

Campaign Goal

To pursue open communication with the Seton Hall community regarding Dr. Esteban’s departure to avoid confusion and frustration.

Target Audiences & Goals

Seton Hall students– To actively communicate with students about their concerns for Dr. Esteban leaving as to not allow them to feel abandoned or add to their frustrations with the university.

Seton Hall families– To assure parents that the state of the university is still in good standing and will continue to follow the upward path it is currently on.

Seton Hall alumni– To remind alumni of all the improvements Dr. Esteban made and ensure that they will continue to drive Seton Hall up in rankings with the help of their donations.

South Orange community– To give the community assurance that the university is still prospering and its culture will not change.

Potential Issues

Question: Who will be the next president?

Answer: The university is starting the search for the new president. We will keep students as updated as possible during this time. For now, Dr. Mary Meehan will serve as the interim president.

Question: Is Dr. Esteban leaving to avoid some type of controversy?

Answer: No. The university is thriving thanks to the leadership of Dr. Esteban and will continue to do so. Dr. Esteban loves Seton Hall, however, DePaul is simply a better fit for him at this point in his life.

Question: What will happen to the projects Dr. Esteban started?

Answer: The welcome center, medical school, and other campus updates will continued as planned. The university still has strong leadership throughout various departments on campus and will all work for what is best for students.

Question: What about graduation?

Answer: Dr. Esteban does not leave until July 1st. Until that time, he will work to ensure that students are having the best experience possible. This includes working to solve graduation issues.

Question: Will the next president be a priest?

Answer: At this time we do not know that answer. We will review the best candidates for the position, both priest and lay, and decide based on who has the best qualifications.

Live Event

Title: Pirate for Life- Dr. Esteban Answers Your Questions

This event would take place on Facebook. When doing a live video, users can comment questions and the person doing the video can see them in real time. Dr. Esteban could be filmed in different places around campus, saying what he loves about them, and answer any questions about his departure.

We chose April the Giraffe as our topic for the interviews. Last Thursday, the Animal Adventure Park in New York set up a Giraffe Cam, a live video stream of one of their giraffes, April, who was said to be expected to give birth “at any minute.”Initially, the videos stream received some critique from animal activists and was temporarily taken down. As of Sunday, however, the video is back up and almost a week from the time it was originally posted, there is still no baby. The live stream spread to Facebook, with many people buzzing about when April might give birth. As I write this post, there are over 80,000 viewers tuned in, anxiously awaiting April’s calf. We chose April as our topic because it is light and fun but still relevant because it started over social media and people are talking about it both in person and on various forms of social media.

We asked each participant 3-4 questions, depending on how the conversation went. We thought that the following 4 questions would allow us to get a good idea of how the interviewees were feeling about April’s labor process being streamed.

  1. Do you know about April the Giraffe?
  2. What was your initial reaction to the video?
  3. When do you think April will give birth? Or do you think it’s a scam?
  4. How often are you checking in on April?

The hashtag that accompanied all live interviews was #whenisaprilgivingbirth because after six days, we thought the question was pretty pressing.


#whenisaprilgivingbirth Students Wait (Not So) Patiently for the Arrival of a Baby Giraffe

Since Animal Adventure Park’s February 23rd live stream of April, a pregnant giraffe showing signs of labor, thousands of viewers are glued to their computer screens in anticipation. When it was originally posted, the caption teased that the birth would happen “any minute now.” It has been six days since then, and still no giraffe calf. Social media is buzzing over the much awaited baby, but we decided to talk to Seton Hall students about their feelings on the topic.

While some are interested in finding out when the baby will come, they have to admit that it’s a bit lackluster. Most of the video is April “just walking around.”

Others are confident that April will pull through and that the birth will be worth the wait and are actively checking in. “I tune into the video every time I scroll past it on my Facebook feed- which is actually a lot!” – Michelle

Some people really feel for April. When asked about when they think April might have her baby Megan answered “Hopefully pretty soon. It seems miserable to be in labor for 3 days.”

All in all, the feelings of April here on campus are pretty positive. Be it an escape from studying for midterms or a genuine interest in giraffes, everyone is anxiously waiting for April and her baby!
